Why did this guy overreact so badly?

I don't exactly know what you mean by 'dismissal.' If you told him that you couldn't make it and that you were sorry and would love to do it another time, then he shouldn't be mad. But if you just didn't show up without notice, you are in the wrong. Just treat people with compion.
